WWE Hell in a Cell 2016 – Championship Cell Stats

Tonight, WWE hosts the 8th annual edition of the Hell in a Cell PPV, with three matches on the card set to take place in the demonic structure, all of which will have championship gold on the line, with Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair looking set to headline in a historic match for women’s wrestling. With all the major RAW singles titles at stake, we look at the track record of champions defending their belts within the compound of the cell since the first of its kind in 1997.

Of the 33 Hell in a Cell matches to have taken place in the last 20 years, 13 of these (39.3%) have also had championship implications involved. Of these 13 matches, every single one has been for a world championship, meaning tonight will see two matches inside the cell which will involve a non world title, in this case, the US and womens’s titles.

Whilst it is theorised that the match type causes a disadvantage to the champion, that hasn’t proved to be the case, with only 23% of title defences in the cell seeing new champions crowned, these three being Undertaker (2009), Randy Orton (2009) and Alberto Del Rio (2011).

Many class the cell as being Taker’s speciality match, however, the majority of his matches have been non-title, with 38.4% of title matches involving the deadman. The same can be said about Triple H, the man who holds the best win record in the cell, as he has been involved in 30.7% of Cell title matches, however together, 61.5% of these matches have involved one of the two.

Traditionally, title defences in this kind of match tend to go over 20 minutes. This has been the case for all bar three of the 13 title matches, the last of which being CM Punk vs Ryback in 2012, which went on for a mere 11 minutes back at Hell in a Cell 2012. Only CM Punk’s defeat to Taker in 2009 is the only title match to go on for a shorter time in the cell.

From the three title matches tonight, four of the wrestlers involved will make their debut in Hell in a Cell. The same amount made their Cell debuts at the 2009 event, with three men marking their debut in the match with a title on the line at Armageddon 2000 as part of the only six man cell match.

WWE Hell in a Cell can be seen live tonight at 1am GMT on the WWE Network.
