You need to look back to 2010 to begin analysing the evolution of NXT.
Following the demise of WWE’s reincarnation of ECW, the company introduced a brand new developmental show on February 23rd that year. Titled ‘NXT’, it’s aim was to find the WWE’s next breakout star.
The show’s original format focused on WWE’s developmental talent, referred to as ‘Rookies’. They would be paired up with ‘Pros’ from the main roster who would act as their coaches and mentors.
The format was similar to that of a reality show, where the ‘Rookies’ would not only be able to showcase their talents in the ring or by cutting promos, but to also compete in challenges to earn ‘Immunity Points’ to remain in the competition.
Like with a lot of reality shows, there was no shortage of drama and controversy. Fans did get to see the rise of a number of fresh and exciting talents moving to the main roster. Notable names included Daniel Bryan, Wade Barrett, Heath Slater and many others.
Nowadays, the show has evolved into WWE’s main developmental brand for the all the new recruits and fastest rising stars in the company. Under the watchful eye of WWE’s Executive VP of Talent and Live Events, Triple H, and general manager, William Regal, the brand now has its own championship titles and showcases some of the greatest competitors from all over the world.
With Steven leading the discussion, alongside Josh and Nathan, we discuss the evolution of NXT and how it became one of the most talked about brands in the wrestling industry.
