Brits Abroad: UK’s best to test themselves in WWE Cruiserweight Classic

On July 13, the WWE network will begin showing a ground-breaking tournament which will break barriers not seen since early TNA X-division days. Creating cross company relations unheard of in the wrestling world. On Wednesday, WWE will begin showing the inaugural Cruiserweight classic.

Whilst the tournament will showcase IWC sensations from Rich Swann to Kota Ibushi, current NXT stars Tommasa Ciampi and Johnny Gargano, as well as old school stars Brian Kendrick and Taijri, the WWECWC (or #WWECWC on Social Media), will give American viewers the first chance to see some of the finest athletes from our side on the pond, the best of British wrestling. Whilst we have sadly been denied the chance to see some of our best high flyers, the Will Ospreay’s, the Bubblegum’s, the Kenny William’s, the El Ligero’s we give a brief insight into the three Brits who have the chance to sign brightest in wrestling’s greatest organisation.

Zack Sabre Jr

Trained by one half of the Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero), Sabre has been a familiar face to British wrestling fans for the best part of a decade. Twice named Wrestling Observer’s best technical wrestler, ‘The Technical Wizard’ has recent tournament experience, getting to the final of the first ever Progress Wrestling Wrestling Super Strong Style 16 tournament. Sabre has fought the world’s best throughout his career, determined to show that he is the best at what he does, with Sami Zayn and Finn Balor amongst his previous foes. His wide range of pinning combinations will thrill a hardcore wrestling fan-base who adore a close call finish, not mention his status as Pro Wrestling Guerrilla championship shows that he would be afraid outwith the UK. The CWC will also reunite him with Daniel Bryan, who he once fought in a 2008 match of the year contender.

Noam Dar

A unique in ring competitor, the 22 year old from Ayrshire, Scotland will become the first Israeli born wrestler to compete in a WWE ring. Dar processes a mixture of high flying style and ground submission that will stand him out from most of the field. Whilst many fans in the UK will mostly know him from his work in Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW), most will argue that his best work has come whilst competing with Preston Championship Wrestling (PCW), wrestling classics with the likes of John Morrison, Rob Van Dam and Drew Galloway, whom Dar once beat in a best 2 out of 3 series, as well as in ICW last year. He is no stranger to series style contests, wrestling Joe Coffey in a best of 5 series, he was ICWs inaugural Zero-G championship, a belt normally associated with the company’s ‘workhorses’. American fans will know him more from his appearance on TNA British Bootcamp, where he reached the final six.

Jack Gallagher

The lesser known of the three, many would argue Gallagher is the closer thing we have now to an old school mat wrestler, and the potential heir apparent to the great William Regal. The Londoner displays a pale look that makes people associate him more as a Sheamus lookalike than an actually wrestler, but the minute he regularly produces grappling masterclass that would give Dean Malenko a run for his money, on top of a hard striking style, Cesaro-like, that comes from a background in mixed martial arts. Last year, he competed in a rare form of the old style 60-minute Ironman match, where only one pinfall occurred in the full time limit, which is a testament to the stamina of the man. In a day where finishers are becoming more and more high risk, Jack decides to instead put his opponents away with a gentleman’s dropkick.

Catch Sabre Jr, Dar, Gallagher and 29 other world class athletes in the WWE Crusierweight Classic, which premiers this Wednesday on the WWE Network.
