In May 2017, a fan asked Wrestling Observer Newsletter journalist Dave Meltzer on Twitter if Ring of Honor could sell 10,000 tickets. Meltzer responded: “Not any time soon.”
Cody Rhodes took Meltzer’s remark as a challenge. He responded to the twet saying: “I’ll take that bet Dave.” Eventually, the idea evolved from a ROH show to a self-funded event (with ROH’s official sanctioning), promoted by Cody and The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson).
Selling out in less 30 minutes, ALL IN already looks set to become the biggest independent wrestling event of all time. Taking place in the one of wrestling heartlands, Chicago, many of the top stars in the industry are scheduled to appear.
11 match are planned for the card that has largely been built up on The Elite’s YouTube channel ‘Being The Elite.’
The headline match is the bout with great historical and legacy significance. It sees Cody attempt to win the NWA World Championship from the UK’s Nick Aldis. With the title being one that his father – The American Dream Dusty Rhodes – held with such pride, this is sure to be an emotional encounter for the American Nightmare.
Fellow event organisers The Young Bucks are also involved. They will team up with Kota Ibushi to take on the team of Bandido, Fenix and, in one of his last independent dates, Rey Mysterio.
Other high profile matchups announced include Kenny Omega taking on Pentagon and Kazuchika Okada facing off with Marty Scurll.
